UNDP has
been supporting the efforts of the government of Bahrain actively
in the past and at present, with a number of activities that
have a direct or indirect relation with the BUIP . These activities
include:
The Physical
Planning Support Project - BAH/80/002
This project assisted the Ministry of Housing in the preparation
and implementation of operational activities in the field of
comprehensive physical planning, regional urban and rural spatial
development plans; and in carrying out housing development studies,
urban renewal studies and detailed local plans. Besides this
it assisted in implementing these settlements plans, housing
programmes and urban renewal projects.
Development
of Old and New Human Settlements Project - BAH/84/004
The emphasis of this project was on direct support in the preparation
and implementation of operational activities in the field of
national physical planning in the preparation of a comprehensive
programme for urban renewal projects, in the formulation of
a continuously updated information base, in the development
of professional capabilities of the local staff and finally
in the establishment of appropriate landscaping methodologies,
techniques and applications.
Assistance
to the Ministry of Housing - BAH/85/006
The 'Development of Old and New Human Settlements' Project was
followed by the 'Assistance to the Ministry of Housing' Project
which paid great emphasis on strengthening the professional
capacity of the Ministry of Housing in the areas of housing
strategies, comprehensive physical development and organizational
methods. It also supported the Physical Planning Department
in its endevour to become more self-reliant through on-the-job
training, exchange of national expertise in the Gulf Regional
and updating and development of existing data bank/base.
Assistance
to the Preparation of the National Landuse Plan - BAH/87/002
The preparation of a national land use plan through the extension
of direct professional support to the {physical planning Department
Once the national land Use Plan would be adopted by Government
it was expected to be an important instrument in the protection
and management of scarce land resources for human settlements
purpose. In order to achieve this the project produced a national
land use plan as a policy instrument to include the designation
of areas for sectoral development acceptable to all concerned
ministries. On top f that approximately 20 planners, managers
and researchers were trained into physical, regional and human
settlement planning and management with specific focus on the
use of computers and their applications.
SHD Networking
and Operationalization in Bahrain
This project, which is ongoing, aims to establish a framework
for a comprehensive Sustainable Human Development (SHD) database
which will concentrate on the labor market information to identify
and promote participation of the local population and labor
force in the mainstream of Sustainable Development.
In addition
to the above, various TA projects to enhance sustainable development
in the areas of Water Resources Management, Environment and
Human Resources Development are ongoing / in the pipeline.
