Location: Bahrain is an archipelago including more than 36 small islands in the Arabian Gulf between the Qatar peninsula and Saudi Arabia. Bahrain Island is a pear shaped land mass 50 km long and 16 km wide. It is connected via a 23-km causeway to Saudi Arabia.

Language: The official language is Arabic. English is widely spoken and is the principal language of commerce.

Population: The total population of Bahrain is 643,000, with a population density of 911 per sq. km. The size of the Bahraini population is around 391,000 complemented by approximately 252,000 non-Bahraini's (mainly foreign workers). The labour Force in Bahrain is around 295,000 people. The majority of the population is concentrated in the northern part of the country. (1998 estimate)
